Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) York is pleased to announce that SoMe Brewing Company owner, David Rowland, and Surfrider Foundation Maine Chapter chairman, Jeff Goodno, have teamed up to organize a fun night to celebrate the kickoff of York’s plastic carryout bag ordinance. They have collaborated on a brand new beer for the event. For each “Old Orange Eyes,” an orange cream ale, sold during the event, $1 will be donated to BYOB York’s Reusable Bag Project.
Come and meet the brewers, have a beer with friends and listen to live music by Fox & Fern from 6 to 9 pm. You are invited to bring food to SoMe to enjoy with your favorite brews. Celebrate how lucky we are to live in York surrounded by a beautiful natural environment and filled with people who care about it! SoMe Brewing is located at 1 York Street. BYOB York will kick off its reusable bag giveaway as part of the evening’s activities. Although the York ordinance permits retail establishments to distribute recyclable paper bags, the most environmentally friendly alternative to a single-use plastic bag is a reusable one. BYOB York is offering a free reusable bag to York residents. The bag giveaway is to remind people that there are many places to shop besides grocery stores where a reusable bag can be used. Help our environment and our small businesses by taking home purchases in a reusable bag. Our goal is one free bag per York household as long as our supply lasts. The bag giveaway program will expand to other locations later this month. Donations for bag purchases are welcomed.
Proposed Ordinance Presented to York Board of Selectmen Meeting Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015
This meeting allowed BYOB to present the proposed ordinance with a goal to determine what path we will need to follow to get the ordinance on an upcoming York ballot. Letting the Board members know there is Town support for an initiative on plastic bags will help clear the way. Visit our Ordinance Page for more information.
First Public Hearing on York Single-Use Bag Ordinance, Monday, March 23, 2015 A public hearing was held during the March 23rd York Board of Selectmen meeting. It was the first opportunity for the community to address the Board and speak in favor or against the Single-Use Bag Ordinance. It is our understanding that the input will be taken into consideration at an upcoming worksession with the Board. We expect some pushback from both business and consumers as the idea of a single-use bag ordinance moves forward. We believe discussion and input from all stakeholders will result in the best possible ordinance on the November ballot.
BYOB had a table at York Farmers Market Saturday, March 7 and 21 at the American Legion. We shared information about the single-use bag ordinance and the impact of plastic in the ocean. We encouraged use of reusable shopping bags. Reusable produce bags, designed and sewn by York resident and BYOB York member, Anastasia Maertens, were on sale at our table. Find out more about these local products on Facebook at www.facebook.com/threebeets.
The award-winning documentary Bag It was shown on March 1 at the York Public Library. Bag It follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health. Jeb recognizes the importance of reducing single-use plastic for the safety of our community and environment. View Trailer»
After the movie, co-sponsor Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation volunteer and York resident, Bob Luttman, led a discussion on what York residents can do to reduce their use of single-use plastics.
